چکیده

From Leonardo da Vinci to the Wright brothers, flight has inspired engineers more than any other form of animal behavior. Like any aircraft, an animal capable of active flight must possess three critical features: a light but powerful engine; wings capable of generating sufficient aerodynamic forces; and a control system to keep it from tumbling to the ground. The special properties of the muscles, wings, and brains that satisfy these requirements have made flying animals useful models in muscle biophysics, fluid mechanics, and neurobiology. The purpose of this primer is to provide an overview of key principles in these three salient areas of flight biology, and is motivated by recent technical advances that are beginning to unravel many long-standing problems. This progress in our understanding of flight biology illustrates the utility of integrative methods, because many key insights have emerged, not simply from a focused analysis of individual elements, but also through more comprehensive approaches that link problems across disciplines. Although flight research embraces a wide variety of different organisms, from dragonflies to flying dragons, I will focus on insects in general, and flies in particular, because they have proven particularly amenable to these interdisciplinary approaches.

Morphological and molecular responses of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) lines to drought stress

Drought stress is a serious adverse factor limiting growth and productivity of sunflower. Evaluation of defense systems is important for producing resistant cultivars. In this study, some agro-morphological and molecular characteristics of six sunflower lines were evaluated under normal and irrigation at 40 and 60% of field capacity in randomized complete block design (RCBD). The results showed...

Evaluation of Grain-Quality Related Traits of F5 Lines of Wheat under Terminal Drought Stress Conditions

Extended Abstract Introduction and Objective: Drought stress is the most prevalent and limiting factor in the growth and productivity of crop plants. According to the challenge of deficiency in precipitation or consecutive droughts in recent years in Iran and as a result of a shortage of irrigation water in wheat production, knowledge of the relationship between grain quality and grain yield ...

Molecular study of 20-line advanced proteins of durum wheat under water stress

In order to investigate different lines of durum wheat for water stress tolerance, an experiment in the greenhouse was implemented, using 20 lines of durum wheat at two levels of water stress (40% and 70% of the amount of available water was completely drained in 0.4 and 0.7 levels of stress, respectyively and re-irrigation was performed) and a control level (complete irrigation) in the form of...
